Tournaments
Janice Blades has started the year nicely but decided a bigger challenge was needed. Thus our Janice decided she would do the British Timken Triple, which means shooting a Worcester, Vegas and Portsmouth. All in all 180+ arrows, slightly barmy is you ask me but Janice is never one to back down from a challenge. Well it seriously paid off as Janice completed the triple with her longbow in first place and the gold medal and a new club record. Saying well done just does not seem enough, so very well done. (5th February 2010)
The first target shoot of the year was Spelthorne Archers Porsmouth Competition, and as usual they put on an excellent event. Janice brought home a Silver in the ladies Longbow event which was a very nice start to the year, well done Janice. (2nd January 2010)
Janice Blades was our only full member shooting at the Herts County Team Champs this weekend but Janice most certainly kept up the clubs success at this event by winning the Bronze medal in the ladies Longbow event. Fantastic shooting Janice, very well done. I would also like to congratulate Fergus Bradfield although he is only an associate member he well and truly broke his 4th place syndrome of last year and walked off with a silver medal in the Gents Compound. (16th November 2009)
Archers attended the Bucks County Indoor Championships this weekend. Janice Blades continued her success and placed 2nd in the visitors Ladies Longbow, very well done Janice. It was also rumored that there were some very ghoulish sweets on offer. All I know is none found there way back to me !!!!! (3rd November 2009)
A few members were competing in the Telford Archers Double FITA Star this weekend which is the last major event of this outdoor season. On a weekend of perfect shooting conditions at Lilleshall, which sort of took everyone by suprise as there was much twiddling of sights - I'm sure there is a 'Lilleshall' list of sight marks in everyone's notes :-) The first days shooting saw Fergus shoot a new PB and new club record, only narrowly missing his 1300 FITA star. The second day saw Janice shoot a new PB, a new club record and a new county record, and the culmination of the two days brought her another county record for the double. A great finish to a superb summer season. Blimey now we have to go indoors, HORRIBLE !!!! (28th September 2009)
A couple of members traveled up to Kettering Bowmen today who were hosting the Northamptonshire County Champs. Although the forecast was good with light winds the reality was very different. Strong winds yet again made shooting quite difficult but this did not stop Gordon shooting another 500+ round in the Men's Longbow York. This incredible performance also gave Gordon his third GMB score, great shooting Gordon and very well done on reaching the highest GNAS standard in Archery. The Chairman just wished he had stayed in bed !!! (13th September 2009)
A good number of members took part in the Bucks County Open Championships this weekend and yet again we did very well. This was in spite of the tricky wind conditions around the targets which seemed to change from shot to shot. In the men's York Fergus Bradfield took the Visitor Compound Gold and Gordon Hurn took the Gold in the Visitor Longbow and shot his second GMB score. In the ladies Hereford Janice Blades placed 3rd and increased her PB for the round by quite a few points. To round off the days shooting Fergus also managed to get a medal for best Gold. Great shooting everybody. (7th September 2009)
The club held its second Outdoor Championships on Saturday in what was very windy conditions, so big surprise there !!!! Many congratulations to all those who won or shot PB's. You can see exactly who did what by following this link. (7th September 2009)
Members attended the Norfolk FITA 3 day event over the bank holiday weekend. The weather was beautiful for the whole weekend, quiet windy the Saturday, but it calmed down after that. Janice had to call an equipment failure, which raised a round of applause after she had shot the end (She left her tab in the tent!). Fergus (or so they were saying up and down the line) didn’t want to be outdone, and called an equipment failure – his serving started to unravel and the peep sight had slipped. His target companions stopped shooting and the 3 of them re-served the string and tied in the peep, on the equipment line! It was a real show of good sportsmanship. Both shot well, and Janice (shooting a longbow) is still trying to figure out how she beat 5 lady recurve archers in the Fita 70 to be seeded 19 out of 24 archers! Janice was knocked out on her first H2H match, but drew quiet a crowd of well-wishers, and as she walked off the line there was a fly past of the Red Arrows! As usual, Tavernham Archers and the judges made everybody feel welcome, and put on an excellent weekend. They even organized an ice cream van to arrive in the lunch break, cool!! (2nd September 2009)
Paul and Karen Hanson traveled over to take part in Braintree Bowmen's American tournament this weekend and both walked off with 1st place honors in the Longbow event. Many congratulations !!! (24th August 2009)
A couple of members represented the club in the British Target Champs this weekend. Janice Blades placed 3rd in the Ladies Longbow event and this also gave Janice her 3rd Bowman score. Great shooting Janice and many congratulations you have really earnt it. (10th August 2009)
More club records were added when Janice and Fergus spent the weekend shooting at the FITA Tournament hosted by Oxford Archers. Although Janice and Karen Freeman were the only Longbows shooting at the event the organisers went out of their way to make the feel at home. This was much appreciated and you can read a little more about it on Tango's Blog. (5th August 2009)
A number of members were shooting at the Beds County Championships this weekend gone. Highlight of the day was Gordon's awesome performance in the Men's Longbow York. He won gold, breaking his own county record and putting in his first GMB score. This is also his third MB score which means he is now a Master Bowman. Other honors of the day went to Alison De Burgh who was 3rd in the Ladies Longbow Hereford and Paul and Karen Hanson placed 2nd in the married couples Longbow event. The day also saw quite a few people breaking PB's for the rounds they were shooting. Well done everybody.(5th August 2009)
This past weekend saw the last of our home fixtures in the Summer League which was against Stortford. In probably the worst wind conditions I have seen on the field the Recurve team although losing the match got within 200 points of Stortford's score. This is quite an achievement as most of the team have been shooting for less than a year. This is a great credit to the Archers that they are getting so close and this is encouraging for the future. I would also like to say a special note of thanks to both Karen and Paul Hanson for providing all the tent and catering equipment. Many thanks and very well done everybody. (30th July 2009)
The 18th/19th July saw three Beaconites shooting at the Beds Fita Star. Despite high winds on the Saturday and both wind and showers on the Sunday, Fergus shot two excellent rounds, earning him a bronze medal and giving him the third magic score for his Bowman Class badge. Well done Fergus, you have certainly earned it. The junior Gold Medal was won by Sean. Janice being the only longbow there(!) shot her best yet again and set both new PB's for the single and double rounds which were also club records. Nice shooting folks. (21st July 2009)
A couple of Archers competed in the Clophill FITA Fest, Fergus Continued his good form by getting to the Quarter Final stage of the Head to Head and he also shot a new PB and club record. Well done Fergus !!! (19th MAy 2009)
A group of club members participated in the Aquarius Archers Longbow Western Tournament. Gordon and Paul shot extremely well and placed 1st and 2nd respectively and on Checking Gordon had beaten the current Hert's County record by 30 points. In the ladies event Karen placed 3rd and when all the scores were combined we also won the team event. Tremendous shooting everybody.(19th July 2009)
Last weekend our nearly formed compound team took part in the 58th Hert's County and Open Championships. On what was a very challenging day with a very variable wind, Fergus and Phil managed 3rd and 4th place respectively in the individual event and took 2nd place in the team event. Phil also managed to claim his Blue Rose. Great shooting guys!! (12th July 2009)
Quite a few members traveled down to near Minehead to take part in the Dunster Archery Week which was held between the 14th and 21st June. The week is made up of events in all disciplines i.e. Target, Field and Clout. Achievements were numerous and you can see how well everybody did by looking at the full results sheets. A very big well done to all over a long weeks shooting. (12th July 2009)
Today we hosted Hertford Company of Archers in our second league match. The weather was extremely hot and sticky with very little wind, which makes a change for our field. It was another great performance by those shooting but we could not quite match Hertfords depth and so they won the match. I would like to thank all our archers for helping out but I feel I need to make a couple of special thanks. Firstly to Robert Winter who spent the previous evening cutting the grass and setting the scene for today's match, the field looked fantastic. Also to Paul and Karen Hanson who organised most of catering and for allowing us to use a great shelter. All this made for a great social afternoon for our guests which was a credit to us all. (28th June 2009)
Gordon Hurn was our lone ranger to make the trip to shoot in the Essex County Target Championships. This was most certainly not wasted as Gordon put in another awesome performance, winning the visitors York Longbow. More importantly his score broke the current Hert's County Record and gives him his first Master Bowman Class score. Keep it up Gordon !! (23rd June 2009)
Club members had continued success when we returned to Harlequin Bowman's Diana Tournament this weekend. Karen Hanson won gold in the Windsor Ladies Longbow Event. Paul Hanson got the silver in the Albion Gents Longbow, Paul and Karen's combined performance got them a Gold Married Couples Mixed event award. Great shooting and very well done. (8th June 2009)
Club Member were also shooting at the Leamington and Midland Archery weekend. Janice Blades completed the weekend with a new PB and more importantly a White Rose to claim. Well done Janice !!!! Fergus Bradfield was also shooting but had to retire following the first day due to a back injury. Get better soon Fergus as Dunster and Spellthorne are approaching rapidly. (1st June 2009)
A few members went along to FOX Archers and shot in their Open Tournament. Gordon Hurn kept his winning streak going by taking the Gold in the Longbow St George round. Paul Hanson also placed 3rd in the Longbow Albion bagging him a nice bronze. Karen Hanson also shot well and increased her PB in the Longbow Short Windsor. So great shooting by everybody and well done to all. (1st June 2009)
The First of the Summer League shoots took place on home ground today, we had compound, recurve and longbow shooting side by side and it was good to see so many archers who have been shooting for less than a year having a go and doing well. Although the sun shone the wind was gusting which made shooting difficult, but a good time was had by all. I would like to thank all the members for their help and look forward to seeing you all on the 28th of June when we are at home against Hertford Company of Archers. (30th May 2009)
Again a large contingent of members attended the Kestrel's Open St George/Albion/Windsors Tournament this weekend and again we walked away with a number of awards. St George Gents Compound - Silver - Fergus Bradfield, . This was an awesome performance as Fergus did not feature on the leader board after the 80yrd distance, seriously good shooting to pull it out of the bag. Gents Longbow - Silver - Gordon Hurn . Albion Gents Longbow - Gold - Paul Hanson, Ladies Longbow - Silver - Janice Blades. The club also retained its Team Longbow win. A good number of PB's were also shot on the day. Performance of the day most definately goes to Peter Morgan who although being pretty poorly completed the round and placed first. Great shooting everybody !!!! (11th May 2009)
A few members took part in the Walsall Company of Archers Double FITA Star this weekend which is one of the biggest shoots of the summer calendar. This year saw nearly 300 archers taking part in the two day event. A good performance was put in by all with new PB's being set and which included some new club records, of special note is Janice Blades who was the ONLY longbow shooting at the event. This caused some interest at the equipment check as the judges were not sure what they were supposed to do with it. Well done to all. (4th May 2009) UPDATE The Gallery now contains some pictures from the day. (24th May 2009)
Members attended the 10th Anniversary Pagoda Shoot today at the Royal Richmond Archery Club. The weather turned out to be superb and it made for a fantastic days shooting. Gordon won the Men's Longbow Albion event and Karen Hanson came second in the Ladies Longbow Windsor event. Well done to both of you. (19th April 2009)
Two Beacon Archers were part of a team that shot in the British Longbow Society’s Indoor Portsmouth Postal League, which is a countrywide competition, over the winter 2009 season and finished very respectably. Gordon Hurn came 11th out of 69 gents, Janice Blades came 8th out of 19 ladies, and their team came 3rd out of 13 teams. Nice shooting both of you! (13th April 2009)
Congratulations go to our Gordon who competed at County level for the first time in the Herts Vs Middlesex Indoor Match. Gordon scored a fantastic 489 which was the best longbow score of the match and this helped Herts win the match. Again very well done Gordon !! (7th April 2009)
Results are available following our Indoor Champs, so use the following link to see how everybody got on. Indoor 2009. It was nice to see a good turn out and some superb performances were put. Well done everybody, now for the BIG outdoors !!! (3rd April 2009)
Club members were also taking part in the Wicken Archers Stafford Competition and again came away with medals. Janice Blades took Silver in the Ladies Longbow followed by Joyce Morgan who won the Bronze. Not letting the boys down, Peter Morgan shot a great round to place 2nd in the Men's Barebow thus getting a silver medal and the first of two for for the weekends shooting. Well done to all. (16th March 2009)
Club members again attended the SCAS Indoor Championships which were also combined with the Sussex County Indoor Championships. We were successful in bringing away a load of honors, Karen Hanson won Silver in the SCAS Ladies Longbow event and Gold in the County Visitor Longbow category. Paul Hanson took the Bronze in the SCAS Men's Longbow event and then teamed up with Karen to take Silver in the SCAS Longbow Team event. Well done and great shooting. (16th March 2009)
Yet again our archers did us proud when a group competed in the GB Indoor Nationals held at Lilleshall. Gordon Hurn shot a very solid round giving him 3rd place, great shooting Gordon ! Quite a few PB's were shot. Unfortunately due to a bug Fergus Bradfield struggled through the round and was thankful to finish, however he did comment that it felt like he had shot a York instead of a FITA 18. The high light of the day was the running of the very first longbow head to head competition which turned out to be a fantastic event. If medals had been awarded we would have picked up another two bronze medals. Gordon finished off the days shooting with a 99 dozen in the H2H event and thus claimed the National Record. So a great but very tiring day, well done to everybody. Some photos will appear on the gallery when I have sorted the 200 taken on the day. (22nd February 2009) UPDATE Gallery now contains some pictures from the day. (26th February 2009)
Some members were shooting at the Kestrel's Record Status Worcester competition yesterday and again they did us all proud. The nicest surprise of the day was Karen Hanson who turned up to support, found a place was available, decided to have a go in her first competition and ended up placing 2nd in the Ladies Longbow event. Very well done Karen I guess we will be seeing more of you on the competition line from now on. Janice Blades followed Karen up with a 3rd place. Continuing on his success from Timken Bowmen, Fergus Bradfield shot a very solid round and placed 2nd in the Gents Compound. Well done everybody another great event for Beacon Archers. (2nd February 2009)
Thanks to Janice for this report - Two Beacon Archers set out to shoot at British Timken Bowmen on Sunday 25th Jan. A Compound and a Barebow (her Horsebow not minding being put in with recurve barebow at all :-) ). Fergus Bradfield and his hardworking compound shot his first Gold medal in the Vegas round and Janice Blade shot her first Gold, shooting the Portsmouth with her horsebow, in it's first competition. (25th January 2009)
A few Archers from the club returned to Westcott for the NFAS Indoor 3D event. Janice Blades again took home 3rd place honors in the ladies longbow. (25th January 2009)
Joyce Morgan claimed a national record at a recent EFAA event for 3D Marked Field in the Veteran Ladies Longbow - Absolutely fantastic and a very big well done to Joyce. (25th January 2009)
Archers visited the very popular GNAS indoor shoot at Westcott Archers. Gordon Hurn took a silver in the gents longbow, Janice Blades picked up silver in the ladies longbow. Jo Cooper won a bronze in the ladies recurve barebow. Well done to all and to the others shooting who achieved PB,s etc. (25th January 2009)
The New Year has started well with success for our archers at Spelthorne Archers Indoor Open. Fergus Bradfield got Bronze in the gents compound and Janice Blades got Silver in the ladies longbow, congratulations to both. The Spelthorne website has some pictures here. If you scroll down to the bottom of the list you can see our members getting their awards. (7th January 2009)
Finally details have come through from County regarding the Winter Leagues, which we would would obviously like to retain our wins in both the longbow events. Please read the following notice as it gives dates and contacts you may need. These are fun shoots to do and everybody is welcome to come and join in no matter what level you shoot at. (15th December 2008)
The club was represented at the Bed's County Open Indoor. Full results are available here, well done to all. (15th December 2008)
Thanks to Janice for the following shoot report. Surrey County and Visitors 30th Anniversary Portsmouth. Welcomed with open arms and a special commemorative badge each. The medal table was something I’ve never seen the like of! It was covered with medals! And they were special commemorative ones - Gold, Silver, Bronze – no matter how many entrants they had! They had session medals – all disciplines, overall medals – all disciplines, and handicap medals – all disciplines, and split out in to 21-40, 41-60, 51-70 (something like that anyway) It took nearly an hour to get through them – and was great fun. They (Woking Archers I believe) put on a great shoot. So the results that interest us: Fergus won session medal with his compound, and I won session medal with my longbow, and also silver overall. Those medals just keep on coming home to roost at Beacon Archers. Oh, and I nearly forgot, Fergus won a bottle of whiskey in the raffle – orange ticket of course. (15th December 2008)
Members who turned up to shoot at the Celtic Harmony Archers Open 3D Field Shoot braved the bitter cold and the usual rain. But the day turned out to be great fun and our one and only princess (Janice) walked off with a 2nd place in the ladies event. Super result even though it was a weirdo shoot!! Photo's from the day have been put on the Celtic Harmony web site here. (25th November 2008)
Yet another good day for the club was at the Herts County Team Championships. Not only did we manage to retain our County Champions crown in the Longbow event which is absolutely fantastic but we had Janice Blades who won the Ladies Longbow event and Gordon Hurn who won the Men's Longbow event. Sean Evans also walked off with a 3rd place in the Men's Recurve. Well done super shooting. But for me the highlight of the day was Joyce Morgan walking off with 3rd place in the Ladies Longbow, great result and what a fantastic grin at the end of it all. The county website has some pictures from the day here. (25th November 2008)
The club had a good turn out at the Green Dragon 500. Well done to all but especially Gordon Hurn - Winner - Men's Longbow and Janice Blades, Joyce Morgan, Peter Morgan and Gordon Hurn who won the silver in the Longbow team event. The shoot was a nice way to start the new season, again well done everybody. (25th November 2008)
A good number of members represented the club at the Bucks County Field Championships Held at Whitemark. Quite a few of the members were shooting a field course for the very first time but as the final scores came in you would not have known. So very well done and great shooting. We also came away with a number of medals in the visitors categories and they are as follows. Sue Mathews - Winner Ladies Longbow, Gordon Hurn - Winner Men's Longbow and Fergus Bradfield - Winner Men's Compound. Well done to all. The gallery has been updated with some photo's from the day. (13th October 2008)
What was probably the last target shoot of the outdoor season saw a number of members taking part in the Cheltenham Archers Hereford/Nationals. But as with a large number of events this summer the weather was truly awful and at one point the judges tent was blown over the top of ours and trapped poor Peter who quietly said "I'm OK !" With the continuous strong winds and horizontal rain all members apart from Pete decided enough was enough. So our "Lone Ranger" Peter continued and ended up just 12 points off 3rd place, a great performance in some very difficult conditions. (6th October 2008)
The clubs first Outdoor Champs were shot in superb weather conditions. A great turn out helped make the event a great success although a bit quite at the beginning, which as any member will know is also a rarity for our club. Things soon got back to normal and everybody seemed to fully enjoy the afternoons shooting. Many congratulations to everybody who won and obviously special congratulations to those that can now be called club Champions. A full set of results can be found here and some pictures from the day have been added to the gallery. (29th September 2008)
The club were away at Hertford Company of Archers for the last of this years Herts County Summer League matches. A good turn out and some fantastic scores were still not quite enough to pull out a win. But this was a great way to finish the season and it is very encouraging for next years competition. Well done to all taking part, especially those who were shooting for the very first time. (21st September 2008)
It was another good turnout at the Bowmen of Warefield Short Metric Tournament with the Longbow team sweeping the board taking all the medals places. Well done to Gordon Hurn, Peter Grand and Peter Morgan. Its was just a shame that they combined both the gents and the ladies events. The day was finished of with a single arrow head to head event which was fantastic fun. (14th September 2008)
The turn out for the Hertford Starlight shoot was much better this year. With the rain completely holding off it was a great evenings fun with a BBQ thrown in for good measure. A number of members won medals so congratulations whatever the colour they may be (Basically because I can't remember who got what). (14th September 2008)
Members attended the Bucks County Open Championships visitor with medals be taken for the following. Gordon Hurn, Gold - York Longbow. Sue Matthews, Hereford - Silver. Gordon Hurn, Peter Grand and Peter Morgan took 1st 2nd and 3rd places respectively in the Gents York - Longbow. Phil Hodgins, Silver in men's recurve - York. But the best performance of the day goes to Janice Blades who became the Bucks County Ladies Longbow Champion, great shooting Janice. Congratulations to all the other members who set PB's and attained new club records. (14th September 2008)
The League match against Hinxworth was shot in some of the strongest winds every on our home field. According to Dunstable Glider clubs Met info the winds were gusting up to 35MPH with sustained 20MPH winds. We also had a shower of horizontal rain which was not pleasant to shot in but everybody kept going, so well done to all those that stayed with it. Congratulations to Hinxworth for winning the match. It was also quite amusing to hear some archers complaining they were well down on their PB's for the round. (11th August 2008)
A number of members were competing in the Bed's County Open Championships. Sue Matthews put in an incredible performance winning the ladies Longbow and gaining her first Master Bowman score. Now Sue needs to shoot another 2 by the end of the season, so no pressure !!!!!. Well done to all the others who placed in the top 5 and who shoot PB's to boot. Its just a shame the county did not seem to recognise the barebow's etc were worthy of mention. Special congratulations must go to Peter Morgan who although being very unwell completed the round, shot a PB and gained his 1st class badge, well done Pete for me you were the star of the day . (5th August 2008) UPDATE Gallery now contains some pictures from the day. (9th August 2008)
This weekend also saw us shooting against Abbey Bowmen in the Herts Summer League. Although we lost the match the team put in a great performance to get close to Abbey who are one of the strongest in the county. (28th July 2008)
The club visited Crowthorne Archers this weekend and competed in thier Open Nationals Tournament. Honours were taken Sue Matthews (Gold - Ladies Longbow), Jo Cooper (Gold - Ladies Barebow), Phil Hodgins (Silver - Gents Recurve). Well done to all the winners. A special winner on the day was Peter Morgan who won longbow best 10 and a very nice trophy. Well done to all the other members who set new PB's and considering the incredible heat on the day everybody did realy well. (27th July 2008)

Many congratulations to Janice Blades who walked off with the Hert's County Visitor award in the Hereford Ladies Longbow. 7th July 2008)
The club had a fantastic turn out for the second match in the Hert's County Summer League which was against Chiltern Archers. Shooting in some very strong gusty winds which made the match far more interesting but we still just managed to take the victory. Well done to all those taking part, especially those shooting in a competition for the first time. Also a big vote of thanks to the members who set the field up it looked superb! (30th June 2008)
Congratulations to Sue Matthews who won the Newport Pagnell Archers double Hereford/York Longbow event walking off with a superb trophy. Oh and Sue's score also beat all the guys scores too !!!! (29th June 2008)
The clubs first friendly shoot which was against Westcott Archers turned out as a great success even though the Australian National round caused a bit of confusion at the start. I must extend a big thank you to Westcott for such a great turn out and entering into the spirit of the evening. I think everybody will agree that the people certainly make the evening. Oh who won ? Well I guess we could claim a draw as over the 4 bow disciplines being shot it was equal spoils. Some pictures are available in the gallery. (22nd June 2008)
The club had yet another successful weekend at the Bowmen of Burleigh's Open Western's Tournament. Medal winners were as follows: Ladies Longbow (Long Western), Sue Matthews - Gold, Alison de Burgh - Silver. Men's Longbow (Long Western) Gordon Hurn - Gold.
